Before Mangadoo: The Rise (and Fall) of Pucklechurch

In the lush fields of the Cotswolds, a chestnut colt named Pucklechurch was bred for greatness. Sired under the watchful eye of the Duke of Emerson and trained by the seasoned Cyril Nolan, this unassuming farm horse was never destined for the racetrack — until Cyril’s 16-year-old nephew, George Nolan, saw something others didn’t.

What followed was the stuff of legends. Pucklechurch stunned the racing world with six consecutive victories, culminating in a runaway nine-length triumph in the prestigious 1872 Epsom Derby. George and Pucklechurch were the toast of England.

But triumph quickly turned to tragedy.

Just as the spotlight found them, Pucklechurch vanished. Accusations swirled. George, the young prodigy, was arrested for suspected foul play. He was tried, sentenced, and shipped to the other side of the world — Western Australia — to serve three years’ hard labour.

From riding silks to convict stripes, George’s fall was as swift as his rise. But far from over.

Because in the red dust of a foreign land, new names take root. And old champions sometimes return… in unexpected ways.

Is Mangadoo just a horse? Or something far more significant?

The answers lie in a story of betrayal, redemption, and the powerful bond between a boy and his horse.
